Crafting the Perfect Sustainable Pocket Folder

When the design community began coming to Corporate Image in search of a sustainable pocket folder, we really weren’t surprised. Every day we get requests from clients like the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife, furniture makers, financial institutions and health-care organizations, all looking for the most eco-friendly materials around. For more than three decades, we’ve been creating products that last longer, look better, and are 100% recyclable.

Once upon a time, plastics and vinyl were considered modern and forward thinking in marketing materials. But now creating print presentation pieces means considering what they’re made of, their life cycle, and the quality of the product. Corporate Image’s products have always been paper based – from the 100% post-consumer-waste paper core of its binders to the range of recycled papers they print on. We believe in paper.

So when our clients came to us with the challenge of creating a more interesting, sustainable pocket folder, we mobilized our team.

Corporate Image looked at the uses, storage and shipping issues, as well as design, functionality and manufacturing. Our packaging team worked with the clients, as well as production and design, to create several new pocket folders that eliminate production steps, save on storage and shipping, and offer beautifully designed and customizable options.

After testing many ideas, making mock-ups, rigorous retesting, and meeting with our clients, we developed a series of new pocket-folder designs.

These folders are unique in that they are glueless. This offers several benefits: saving energy and materials in manufacturing, less packaging and space, and cutting shipping and storage costs. Some of the folders use tuck-flaps; others fold over to enclose the documents inside.

Did it work?

Boy did it. The glueless pocket folder line has been used across many industries, from financial to health care to construction. The factors that all of these sectors appreciate are actually the same even though these clients are in very different fields: These folders take up less space in the office and they meet the twin goals of a high-end look and sustainability.
